Channel Islands Financial Ombudsman

The primary role of CIFO is to resolve complaints about financial services provided in/or from the Channel Islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark. CIFO is the joint operation of two statutory ombudsman roles, established in law by the Financial Services Ombudsman (Jersey) Law 2014 and the Financial Services Ombudsman (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law 2014.

England

Housing Ombudsman Service

Deals with complaints from people who receive a direct service from registered social landlords in England, and certain other landlords who are members of the scheme including bodies who take over the management of homes transferred from local authorities. Some private landlords are members of the scheme. The Ombudsman can also consider other disputes involving a member landlord whether or not there is evidence of maladministration, provided they are about the management of the complainant's home.

Independent Football Ombudsman

Was established by the English Football Authorities (The Football Association, The Premier League and The Football League) with the agreement of the Government. The IFO has a clear remit to receive and adjudicate on complaints which have not been resolved at an earlier stage and will act as the final stage in football's complaints procedure. The IFO is the successor body to the Independent Football Commission (IFC), which operated from 2002 to 2008 as an integral part of football's self-regulatory system.

Local Government Ombudsman

The Local Government Ombudsman looks at complaints about councils and some other authorities and organisations, including education admissions appeal panels and adult social care providers (such as care homes and home care providers). It is a free service. Our job is to investigate complaints in a fair and independent way - we do not take sides. By law, some kinds of complaint cannot be considered. Examples are personnel complaints and complaints about the internal running of schools

Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education

Reviews decisions made by higher education institutions (HEIs) in relation to students. The scheme became statutory on 1 January 2005 and all HEIs in England and Wales are required to participate. The Office does not review complaints about admissions or matters of academic judgement. Students must first exhaust the HEI's internal complaints procedures.

Independent Complaints Reviewer

Investigates complaints about the Land Registry, the National Archives, the Northern Ireland Youth Justice Agency and the Children's Commissioner for Wales. Her role is to establish whether there has been maladministration on the part of the agency in the conduct of matters giving rise to complaints. These include failure to meet standards of service, quality, speed and performance. Where appropriate she makes recommendations aimed at putting matters right for an individual complainant and improving services in the future.

Independent Police Complaints Commission

The IPCC was established by the Police Reform Act and became operational in April 2004. The IPCC is independent, making its decisions entirely independently of the police, government and complainants. Its primary statutory purpose is to increase public confidence in the police complaints system in England and Wales. The IPCC also investigates the most serious complaints and allegations of misconduct against the police in England and Wales, as well as handling some appeals from people who are not satisfied with the way police have dealt with their complaint. The IPCC is responsible for serious complaints and conduct matters relating to staff at the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC), and the UK Border Agency (UKBA). On 16 January 2012, the Metropolitan Police Authority was abolished and the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) was established. The IPCC is now responsible for deciding whether any allegations that the MOPAC or his Deputy has committed a criminal offence should be investigated. On 22 November 2012, Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) for each force in England and Wales were elected. The IPCC is now responsible for deciding whether any allegations that the PCC or their Deputy have committed a criminal offence should be investigated.

Legal Ombudsman

Waterways Ombudsman

Considers complaints of maladministration or unfairness against the Canal and River Trust, once its internal complaints procedure has been completed. The Ombudsman cannot investigate complaints about personnel matters, or matters which have been, or are being, considered by a court. There is a time limit for bringing complaints.

Property Ombudsman

Scheme deals with complaints against estate agents, lettings agents, commercial property agents, residential leasehold management agents, international property agents and valuers and auctioneers who are members of the scheme. Approximately 95% of estate agents and 60% of letting agents operating in the UK are members of the Scheme and follow TPO's Codes of Practice. Disputes concerning surveys are excluded.

Police Investigations & Review Commissioner

Adjudicator

Investigates complaints from people and businesses about how HM Revenue and Customs, Valuation Office Agency or the Insolvency service have handled their affairs. Advertising Standards Authority (ASA)

Applies the advertising codes and upholds standards in all media on behalf of consumers, business and society. The Codes (TV, radio, and non-broadcast) are written by the Committee of Advertising Practice, part of the industry wing of the self-regulatory system. The broadcast side of the business is conducted in a co-regulatory partnership with the communications regulator Ofcom. The ASA responds to written and telephone complaints (from the public and business competitors), and its website has an online complaints form. It also deals with complaints referred by other agencies, including Trading Standards. The ASA is recognised by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) as the established means for dealing with misleading advertising under the control of Misleading Advertisements Regulations.

Dispute Service Ltd

Is an independent, not-for-profit company established in 2003 to resolve tenancy deposit disputes arising in the private rented sector speedily, cost-effectively and fairly. It operates an insurance-backed Tenancy Deposit Scheme under a service concession agreement with the Department for Communities and Local Government. In addition to being awarded the Government's Customer Service Excellence Award, it was voted the best tenancy deposit scheme at the Property Drum B2B Awards in 2012. Its adjudicators are members of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. It provides key services to SafeDeposits Scotland and is the parent company of TDS Northern Ireland.

Furniture Ombudsman

The Furniture Ombudsman, operated by the Dispute Resolution Ombudsman Ltd, is an independent not-for-profit organisation which helps to raise standards and resolve disputes between consumers and retailers. The service was established in 1992 with the support of government and many of the UKís largest retailers are registered with it. Their jurisdiction extends to disputes arising out of goods and services purchased in approximately 4,500 retail outlets and via the internet. A Standards Board comprising of individuals from Trading Standards, Citizens Advice and the retail sector help to preserve its effectiveness, independence and impartiality. Many of The Furniture Ombudsman's dispute resolution staff are legally and professionally qualified and its work is recognised by the European Commission, Trading Standards and Citizens Advice.

The Information Commissionerís Office (ICO) is the UKís independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals. Pensions Ombudsman Service
