Law Society of Ireland

Law Society of Scotland

The Law Society of Scotland Complaints Team is responsible for dealing with complaints made by both solicitors and members of the public about the conduct of solicitors. Complaints investigations are carried out in writing and the leaflet Conduct Complaints against Scottish Solicitors is available from the Law Society of Scotland and on the Society's website which gives details of procedures involved in investigating a complaint. All complaints in the first instance however require to be made to the Scottish Legal Complaints Commission which is the single Gateway for all complaints against legal professionals in Scotland. Lay Observer for Northern Ireland

monitors complaints made by members of the public to the Law Society of Northern Ireland about the conduct of solicitors and the manner in which the complaints are dealt with by the Society. He also considers allegations made by individuals who are not satisfied with the Law Society's handling of complaints.

Legal Ombudsman

deals with service complaints about lawyers, and has replaced the previous complaints organisations for the legal profession, including the Legal Complaints Service (for solicitors), the Complaints Commissioner for the Bar Standards Board (for barristers) and the former Legal Services Ombudsman.

Local Government Ombudsman

The Local Government Ombudsman looks at complaints about councils and some other authorities and organisations, including education admissions appeal panels and adult social care providers (such as care homes and home care providers). It is a free service. Our job is to investigate complaints in a fair and independent way - we do not take sides. By law, some kinds of complaint cannot be considered. Examples are personnel complaints and complaints about the internal running of schools
