There is a role for a Press (or Media) Ombudsman scheme as part of a proportionate system of checks and balances.  It could provide an independent, informal, efficient, effective and economical means of resolving a large proportion of complaints that arise. 

There is scope to design a Press (or Media) Ombudsman scheme that meets the needs of the sector but it is vital that it should remain true to fundamental ombudsman principles, if it is to capture and hold public confidence.
