The Irish Ombudsman Forum has called for increased engagement between Ombudsman offices and the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Petitions.

The Forum's submission to the Committee (opens in new tab) regarding their terms of reference, sets out the benefits of  a single Committee having oversight of the activity of all Ombudsman offices in Ireland, to ensure that people have comprehensive access to redress and that opportunities for learning and development are maximised.

The Forum suggested that the Terms of Reference be extended to enable the Committee to maintain an overview of any Ombudsman Office in Ireland, which is not already subject to oversight by a specific Oireachtas Committee, and to make proposals for development and reform.
